In the first half of 2014, the total sales of Jinjiang ceramics, mainly exterior wall tiles, decrease by more than one third; exterior wall tile enterprises in places like Cizao town, Neikeng town and Guanqiao town (Nan’an city) etc. have to stop some kilns.

Many small and medium enterprises are faced with few sales of products, excess inventory and cash flow difficulties, which force the ceramic enterprises to suspend or suppress production capacity. Early this year, 120-130 (about 30%) out of 410 production lines (180 in Cizao Town) have been suspended and more than 10 ceramic companies have stopped all the production.

However, Jinjiang ceramics still have a not bad performance in this hard time: in the fisrt half of 2014, above-scale industrial GDP is ¥21.236 billion, and building ceramic GDP is ¥15.871 billion (+5.6% year-on-year) which is still a pillar industry in Jinjiang.

Indeed, ceramic enterprises in Jinjiang performance this year is not optimistic. According to insiders, one third of interior wall tile production lines have been stopped in Jinjiang this year while 20% of exterior wall tile production lines stopped. Most of ceramic enterprises have 20% of the inventory backlog, and only 80% of the products have been sold. The main reason is that the rising cost of natural gas makes Jinjiang lose the price advantage when compared with the outer areas of Shandong, Jiangxi or Guangdong.

A general manager in ceramic enterprise says, total sales in the first half of this year doesn’t decrease, because of the best sellers like inkjet antique tiles whose quality are relatively stable to earn customer’s trust. Exports in the first half of this year increase 20% with a sales ratio of 90%. Now the sales ratio of exports and that of imports are 50-50, especially because export market in South America expands, demanding quite a lot of products.
