Foreign Brands of Tiles in China in 2017 First Half

Though the export of Chinese ceramic tiles experienced a downward trend in the first half of 2017, both volume and value of imported ceramic tiles in China saw a year-on-year growth. It seems that there is an increasingly promising market for foreign  brands of tiles in China.

According to the customs data, the accumulative value of imported ceramic tiles in China from January to June reached $51.8724 million with a year-on-year increase of 26.61% while the accumulative volume of imported ceramic tiles in China attained 2.8266 million square meters with a year-on-year growth of 24.27%.  

From the comparison of the monthly value of imported ceramic tiles in the last three years, except the January, the imports of each month in the first half of 2017 were higher than those of last two years. See Table 1.

1Import Distribution of Trading Regions

The customs data shows that from January to June in 2017, the top ten trading regions which have exported the largest volume of ceramic tiles to China are Italy, Spain, Malaysia, German, China, Portugal, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and the United Kingdom. 

Among them, the value of imported ceramic tiles form Italy and Spain accounted for over 90% of that of the total. The accumulative value of imported Italian tiles in China amounted to $34.2958 million which increased by 35.58% YoY, accounting for 66.12% of the total value of imported foreign tiles in China (see chart 2). As for Spain, the value reached $13.6826 million which grew by 8.14% YoY, occupying 26.38%.

In terms of the growth rate of value of exporting ceramic tiles to China, South Korea and German and Malaysia saw a substantial growth of 1240.82%, 126.92% and 75.53% respectively. 

Among the top ten trading regions which owned the largest export value of ceramic tiles to China, only the United Kingdom and Japan fell by 15.99% and 5.74% respectively. Chart 1 and Table 2 show the proportion and the YoY data of China’s import value of the ceramic tiles from the main trading regions in the first half of 2017.

2Import Distribution of Domestic Regions

In the first half of 2017, nearly 90% of the imported tiles were presented in Guangdong, Beijing and Shanghai. And the accumulative value of imported tiles in Guangdong totaled $18.868 million with a YoY growth of 30.36%, accounting for 36.37% of the total value of imported tiles in China. Beijing was $16.6237 million which increased by 31.73% YoY, occupying 32.05%; Shanghai was $10.5782 million which raised by 9.37% YoY , taking up 20.39%.

As for the growth rate of value of imported ceramic tiles in the top ten domestic regions, only Hebei and Shandong saw a negative growth of 22.57% and 4.77% respectively. While Sichuan, Fujian and Zhejiang achieved substantial growth, reaching  364.69%,311.56% and 95.09% respectively. Chart 2 and Table 3 show the proportion and the YoY data of China’s import value of ceramic tiles in the top ten regions in the first half of 2017.
